The Internet Archive is testing distributing public materials with bittorrent starting with Librivox!

So in the upper left of pages, next to "HTTP" will be a link to "Torrent" (see http://archive.org/details/romeoandjuliet_ss_0901_librivox )

Please check it out and see if it works for you and report any issues on this thread.

Just fyi, I just downloaded this torrent(romeoandjuliet) using Miro, which uses Libtorrent, in about 12 minutes. I also downloaded a large YMSB torrent very quickly. I don't quite understand the concept of using bittorrent without being able to upload back though.

I am sorry, I dont understand. If you download something with bittorrent and others want the same item's torrent, you will upload to them. I this what you are referring to?

Maybe I didn't understand. I thought I had read that it was one way. And my bittorrent client said there were others downloading but nothing was uploaded to them. But my main point was how fast it worked.

it takes a little while to start up for me in transmission, but then it is faster than downloading via http.

If this is not your experience, that would be very helpful to know. what torrent client are you using and what items are you downloading?

Thanks for alerting us of this problem!

There was indeed at least one bug in the code for producing Torrents, specifically triggered to the case of a given item being "derived" by us.

I will introduce a fix today andre-create the Torrent file for the two texts mentioned, and verify that they work. When I do so, I will confirm that in a reply here.

(The bug that I fixed is specific to items that were updated in some fashion over this past weekend.)

Thanks again and please let us know about any other problems!

I believe the Torrent available here:

http://archive.org/details/dickens200_vol5_1207_librivox

For the Dickens collection is now correct. Please discard the old Torrent, as it contains incorrect information (webseeds on where to locate the item on our servers if there are no peers available).

The new version should complete download using webseeding. (Torrent information was inspected directly, and download with current uTorrent on MacOS X completed successfully)

Please let us know if it doesn't work for you!

There may be other affected items in the Librivox collection, I will be working over the next day or two to find and update them. :)

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention!

Just tried the Dickens item with Vuze (Azureus) on a PC netbook. Worked like a charm.

http://archive.org/details/LibrivoxM4bCollectionAudiobooks looks like a bit torrent has been tried for it - We have used about 40 of our pages for coverart and storing m4b files so there will probably need to some sort of work round by us or you

I see you are taking efforts to create m4b files... should we make the automatically for each item? (I dont know anything more than a quick web search about them).

Hi Anne,

This was one of the first items we built a Torrent for, it's possible there was some bug, but I wasn't sure if you had had a problem trying to retrieve the Torrent or not.

If so please let us know and we will recreate it; or, optionally, any change to the item at this point should trigger an update to the Torrent automatically.

Best regards,
Aaron (Internet Archive engineer working on BitTorrent)

We seem to be getting some code in the left hand side bar on all the pages I have looked at
This was on http://archive.org/details/12_creepytales_1206_librivox

Thanks for the alert!

We encountered a new error case over the weekend when one of our trackers was temporarily offline.

It's patched now, and we're working on a long-term patch so this does not occur again.

Sincere apologies for the service disruption and display issues!

It just had an error message in the spot where the bit torrent link appears.
A longer explanation, hope you want it
We have pages which we use for things that are not mp3 files .
This particular page has in fact a large number of files in M4B format which a group of volunteers made and wanted to share as there is a demand for them. So all that is on it are M4B files and an image file or 2 . I set it to "do not derive".
So it would probably not work the same as the normal pages - but that is a guess on my part.
I'm happy to answer any questions about it - I set it up the way it is now not really expecting to have over 3600 projects.

Currently all the different formats are together in single torrent. Would it be possible to only have Ogg Vorbis format files in one torrent?

we have not figured out how to do that without a combinatorial explosion. I think we will need to extend the magnet link structure or something like that. any ideas would be helpful.
